Banksy (English, b. 1974) is a globally-recognized graffiti artist, activist, and provocateur. Known for his anonymity and stenciled figures, his work regularly engages political themes, satirically critiquing war, capitalism, hypocrisy, and greed. To this effect, his depictions of rats, apes, policemen, royalty, and children have surreptitiously appeared in museums, on street corners, and in installations throughout London and around the world. Democratic at heart, Banksy’s work spurns the bourgeois nature of the art world, as demonstrated in 2018 when he deliberately shredded one of his pieces moments after it sold at Sotheby’s. Still, his popularity forces him to tread a fine line between commercial and street art, which he examined in his Academy Award-nominated documentary, ‘Exit Through the Gift Shop.’
