Elizabeth Peyton (American, b. 1965) is a contemporary painter, best known for her portraits of artists, musicians, historical figures, and athletes. After graduating from the School of Visual Arts, she received critical acclaim for her second solo exhibition, which featured images of Mademoiselle George, the reputed lover of Napoleon and the Duke of Wellington, in a hotel room in Chelsea. Praised for her expert use of color and composition, her work has been extensively exhibited internationally in galleries and museums. It currently resides within several major collections, including the Guggenheim, MoMA, Centre Georges Pompidou, the Kunstmuseum, Tate Modern, the Walker Art Center, and the Whitney Museum.
