Leon Levinstein (American, 1910-1988) was best-known for his classic American street photography. Spending much of his time in neighborhoods around New York City after he was discharged from the Air Corps as a mechanic in 1945, he focused his attention on life in the streets. He spent the next 35 years obsessively taking pictures of strangers in his adopted city, capturing New York’s eccentricities and resilience throughout the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s.
