Marlene Dumas (South African, b.1953) is largely recognized as one of the most influential and important contemporary painters. Her work focuses on the human figure as the site where issues of inequality and identity converge. She regularly paints the body in extreme conditions – as dead or recently born, murdered or erotically charged. Her work has been critically acclaimed and internationally exhibited. Dumas lives and works in Amsterdam.
