Robert Indiana

Robert Indiana (American, 1928-2018), also known as Robert Clark, was an American painter, sculptor, and printmaker, who studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and Edinburgh University and Edinburgh College of Art. Indiana moved to New York in 1954, where he began assembling wood sculptures from found materials and stenciling painted words onto them. Indiana called himself a “sign painter,” a reference to his humble beginnings. His works are characterized by his use of "typically" American subject matter, their bright colors, and clearly defined contours align him with the Pop art aesthetic.
