The present lot is descriptive of Manzoni’s ironic and perverse style. Calling into play his specific dialogue with the relationship between art production and human production, the current lot is a reproduction of the artist's seminal work, 'Merda d’Artista' (1961), in which Manzoni packaged multiple 30mg tins of his excrement as if it was manufactured for sale.

Piero Manzoni (Italian, 1933-1963) was closely associated with the avant-garde art movement of the mid-twentieth century. It has been claimed that his ironic approach to art influenced a number of younger Italian artists associated with “Arte Povera,” a radical practice stemming from the political upheaval that plagued 1960s Italy. Piero Manzoni’s works are often constituted by their radical gestures and ironic tone. In particular, these works have inspired a critical dialogue of the art system and the representation of the artist within it.
