Israel emphasises Los Angeles as central to an understanding of American culture and the American dream. Channelling celebrity culture and popular media, as well as the slick appearance and aspirations of Los Angeles, the entertainment capital, Israel approaches his hometown with an uncanny coupling of local familiarity and anthropological curiosity.

Alex Israel (American, b.1982) routinely explores his hometown of Los Angeles through a garish and pastel combination of sets painted on the lot at Warner Brothers Studio in Burbank, California. His caustic and comic perusal of the Hollywood scene is both pithy and exact in that he presents celebrity culture and obsession with an almost pithy intuition that seems to stem from personal experience. His television series, “As It Lays” pokes fun at interview culture, and provides a strict departure to his previous claim to fame as the late artist Jason Rhoades’ assistant. In 2010, he launched the Freeway Eyewear brand, which takes the names of their styles based on highways and roadways found throughout Los Angeles. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
