A native Chicagoan, long-term professor of photography (1978-2017), and former chair of the Columbia College Chicago Photography Department (1999-2011), Bob Thall is best known for his comprehensive depictions of the ever-changing city of Chicago. Using a view camera, Thall creates formally rigorous and deadpan portrayals of the city’s urban and suburban landscape, treating the sprawling northern suburbs and compact alleys all with the same level of carefulness. This image is part of his intensive project depicting Chicago’s downtown for over three decades (1977-2010). Choosing to photograph early in the morning or in the evening after rush hour when the streets are almost empty, Thall’s images capture an eerie stillness that differs from the city’s otherwise tumultuous urban terrain.
