Brad Elterman began photographing musicians in unguarded backstage moments as a teenager in Los Angeles in the 1970s—consciously avoiding the cliché-d performance style that had become the preferred standard for music photography at the time. Here, Elterman cleverly slipped to the back of the press ‘bull pen’ at the American Music Awards and captured this revealing photo of the press corp with the subject of their attention just inside the frame, a study in the workings of the celebrity media machine. Elterman would also document Hollywood stars of the era along with the excesses of the chaotic 70s scene. His photos simultaneously capture the edginess of the subjects and project a laconic California cool.
This photograph is from an edition of three as part of a “greatest hits” series created exclusively for this auction.
