Contemporary painter Brian Calvin (American, b. 1969) is noted for his stylized figurative paintings. His dimensionally flat pictorial style, reminiscent of Alex Katz and David Hockney, eschews narrative to focus on light-filled compositions and believable figures with neutral expressions. In a natural progression to simplify his work, Calvin’s later pieces have come to depict individual facial features on stark backgrounds without any supplementary context. His paintings have been exhibited at the Anton Kern, New York; Almine Rech, Paris; and Corvi-Mora, London, and are held in the collections of the Portland Art Museum and the DePaul Art Museum.
