Christo and Jeanne-Claude are known for their fabric-wrapped objects. The Gates included 7,503 fabric paneled structures all through New York City’s Central Park. The installation of The Gates was completed in 2005. The couple exclusively finances their projects through donations and the sale of smaller works on paper that correlate with their installations in order to remain independent from sponsors and the control of public authorities.

About Christo and Jeanne-Claude

Christo (American, Bulgarian-born Christo Vladimirov Javacheff, b.1935) and Jeanne-Claude (American, French-born Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon, 1935 –2009) were a couple most known for creating conceptually and visually impressive works that covered familiar locations and monuments in swaths of fabric. Sometimes seen as controversial due to their scale and the monuments chosen, their environmental artworks examine and create new ways of viewing familiar landscapes. Their most famed works include, “Wrapped Reichstag”, Berlin (1971-95), “The Umbrellas”, Japan - USA (1984-91) and “Surrounded Islands”, Biscayne Bay, Greater Miami, Florida (1980-83).
