Culling from the unlimited supply of images from film, television, press, art history, and the Internet, Cindy Sherman’s work presents an eloquent and provocative exploration of the construction of contemporary identity and the nature of representation. To create her photographs, she assumes the multiple roles of photographer, model, make-up artist, hairdresser, and stylist. Here, she assumes the dress, props, and disposition of Mrs. Claus.

Cindy Sherman (American, b. 1954) is a contemporary photographer, filmmaker and performance artist. She is widely known for her distinct shooting style and her singular choice of subject: herself. Through various disguises, prosthetics, and makeup, Sherman brings to focus the nature of representation and femininity with reference to various literary and internet media as source inspiration. Her works allude to the contemporary construction of identity as either a product of popular culture or as reactions to various, socially-defined, female personality types mined from present society. She has been exhibited internationally.
