Nike of Samothrace with Blue and White Squares is one of a series of works inspired by Nike of Samothrace, the renowned sculpture of Greek origin now in the Louvre and a muse to the artist. Gianakos has here analyzed the timeless figure’s sculptural qualities into two squares, blue and white, and two red lines delineating the geography of the figure. He transforms its balance, structure and tension with the major element of Russian Constructivism, the square, over a veil of white. Gianakos’s work moves freely between different media, with his sculptures, two-dimensional works, drawings, paintings, prints, and installations engaging in a continuous dialogue.
