‘A Portrait of Lemmie with Green Velvet’ presents its male subject in a visual landscape reminiscent of traditional Baroque painting in which strong contrast is created between dark shadows and bright highlights. The artist’s use of rich green velvet draping and floral branches in the posing of his subject reflects elements of classical symbolism; a theme carried throughout much of Collins’ work as a whole. Strong sexual and sultry undertones are emitted through the glossy, wet appearance of the male’s lips and highlighted nude body.
