This is an image of refugees leaving Venezuela on a tiny boat into the Caribbean published in the NYTimes. Painted using interference paints only in the RGB spectrum (Red, Green, Blue).
“This work is a painted recreation of an image published in the New York Times, depicting a group of refugees leaving Venezuela on a small boat into the Caribbean Sea. Although the work is imitating photography, it alludes to the traditions of European painting through its discernable and accurate arrangement of brushstrokes. However, Cantoni’s technique is ground-breaking: the artist uses the digital color system RGB (Red, Green, Blue) – which produces different images depending on the way the light hits the canvas – to call attention to the change in the production of images from analog to digital. Refugees leaving Venezuela questions the provision and consumption of images in our society and addresses contemporary issues of globalization and displacement—pertinent issues in our modern world.”
