In “Pop-Eye-Con” D*Face presents a complex, multi-panel print featuring various pop culture motifs. The formal arrangement gives a nod to the famous surrealist game “cadavre exquis” (or exquisite corpse) whereby different artists would take turns finishing a drawing while only being allowed to see a brief portion of what was already completed. D*Face’s work remixes this surrealist trope with the typical imagery of Pop art.

D*Face, born Dean Stockton (English, b. 1978), is a London-based street artist fascinated by love, loss, and the immortalization of celebrities. Thematically, D*Face draws on personal experiences and the consumerist impulses of modernity’s fascination with the media and technology. Using a variety of different mediums, the artist aims to encourage the public not to just “see,” but to look at what surrounds them and their lives. By re-thinking, reworking and subverting imagery drawn from decades of advertising, comic books, cartoons, and pop-culture, D*Face uses these motifs, cultural figures, and genres to comment on our conspicuous capitalist society.
