Syrian-born and Brooklyn-based Diana Al-Hadid (b. 1981) is known for a practice that spans media and scale, and examines and illustrates perspective through themes of architecture, history and narrative. Al-Hadid’s rich, formal allusions cross cultures and disciplines, drawing inspiration from myriad sources including ancient invention, science, myth and Old Master works. Making drawings since her adolescent years, Al-Hadid creates meticulous renderings driven by a fascination with the depiction of space and perspective. Each of Al-Hadid’s drawings on mylar is a complex mesh of lines, shapes, and muted, yet still vivid, colors. Although largely abstract, these drawings contain abundant hints and traces of buildings, landscape, and figures.
