Futura (American, b. 1955), alias of Leonard McGurr, is a graffiti artist currently living and working in New York and closely associated with the street art movement of the 1980s. Preceding the year 2000, the artist referred to himself as Futura 2000, a moniker he coined at the age of 15. Following the millennium, he shortened his pen name to Futura, as he is now known. An active participant in the graffiti movement as a youth, he made the transition to a more abstract canvas in 1980, with particular motivations to transcend the barriers between street, commercial and fine art. His works explore the disjointed but seemingly coordinate worlds of the gallery space and street art through a series of largely abstract compositions drawing on both street and fine art.
