Gregory Crewdson (American, b. 1962) crafts highly stylized cinematic landscapes. His lush, large scale images transform ordinary people in ordinary places into surrealistic stills. Constructing elaborate sets on sound stages–or working in situ in Pittsfield, Massachusetts–Crewdson conveys extraordinary attention to detail and narrative portent. Directing each image with precise intention, his images manage to maintain a kind of candid quality. He has cited the films Vertigo, The Night of the Hunter, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Blue Velvet, and Safe as having influenced his style, as well as the painter Edward Hopper and photographer Diane Arbus.
