In his ’Pseudo Character’ series, Gu Wenda produces Chinese calligraphy on a grand scale, reveling in the stark simplicity of its monumental form. By focusing on a single character, the artist is able to contemplate ink as both a conceptual practice and an avenue through which to consider China’s relationship to the world.

Gu is best known for his extensive exploration of traditional Chinese language and poetry through the creation of large scale calligraphic installations, often incorporating actual human hair as his main medium.
