In his ’Pseudo Character’ series, Gu Wenda produces Chinese calligraphy on a grand scale, reveling in the stark simplicity of its monumental form. By focusing on a single character, the artist is able to contemplate ink as both a conceptual practice and an avenue through which to consider China’s relationship to the world.

Though initially trained under state-sanctioned art education, Gu Wenda (Chinese, b.1955) has become one of the most innovative and politically subversive Chinese artists on the contemporary art scene. Gu is best known for his extensive exploration of traditional Chinese language and poetry through the creation of large scale calligraphic installations, often incorporating actual human hair as his main medium. Currently, over one million donors have contributed to the ‘United Nations Project.’
