Regarded as a key figure in the development of Pop Art, James Rosenquist (American, 1933-2017) readily used commercial aesthetics and popular imagery throughout his work. Beginning as a billboard painter, Rosenquist combined visual advertising techniques and references to mass media to create bold compositions that inherently questioned the tendencies of modern society. His works are held in numerous public collections worldwide, including the Art Gallery of Ontario; the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Museum fur Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt; and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
