James Welling (American, b. 1951) is considered one of the most important photographers of the so-called "Pictures Generation," a group of artists working in New York during the 1980s who reconsidered photography as a conceptually complex art form. He received his B.F.A. and M.F.A. from the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California, where he studied under John Baldessari. Often interrogating the photographic process, both chemical and digital, Welling’s work considers a range of approaches to picture making. Several of his photographs explore the relationship between the mechanics of photography and the processes of painting, as well as emphasizing the role of light in photography as both a vital aesthetic element and the catalyst for the photograph’s development. Welling lives and works in Los Angeles.
