A sublime display of contrasting areas of light and shadow, ’Untitled (Cloud #8)’ by John Schabel features a full, billowing cloud against a flat dark background. The complex subtleties of the image are brought out through the simplistic beauty inherent to black and white photography.

John Schabel (American, b. 1957) is a contemporary photographer known for his black-and-white “Passenger” series in which he photographed people seated on planes, as seen through the aircrafts' porthole windows. Unbeknownst to the anonymous flyers, Schabel voyeuristically photographed them with a telephoto lens from a safe distance, nearly 100 yards away. The series revealed intriguing portraits of the unknowing travelers powerlessly waiting for their flight to takeoff. Some of them appear to be anxiously preparing themselves for the trip while others have already begun their slumber. This transitionary period between comfort and distress is a prominent theme Schabel searches for with his work.
