Exploring American and International landscapes, Josef Hoflehner echoes the photographic itineraries of Robert Frank and Stephen Shore to tease out the bold, the bland, and the expanse of his environment. His intense black and white photographs charge the scene or the subject with a dramatic pulse further enhanced by the high contrast and awe-inspiring perspective. As the Jet Airliner soars over the seascape in “Jet Airliner #43 (Continental Airlines Boeing 737-700, Arriving from Newark, NJ)”, Hoflehner highlights its dualistic references, bridging military history and connotations of leisure and travel through the image.

Josef Hoflehner (Austrian, b. 1955) is a photographer known for documenting secluded sites in places as diverse as Antarctica, Vietnam, China, Japan, Yemen, and Iceland. He is best known for his “Jet Airliner” project, a series of high-key, low-tonal contrast photographs, where he discovered surreal beach landscapes near international airports. Through his works, Hoeflehner’s offers a legible and linked dichotomy between the natural and the man-made, creating a mythical interpretation of our immediate spaces.
