(American, 1941-2019) Active since the mid-1970s, Joyce Pensato was a painter living and working in Brooklyn, NY. Often drawing from the lexicon of top-shelf cartoon characters, Pensato's work bloats, skews, and abstracts well-known and -loved icons such as Daffy, Batman, and Homer Simpson to transform them into something ominous and startling. To see her representations of these positively ingrained animated idols is to have the playful veneer chipped away and a lurking darkness exposed. Pensato received much acclaim during her working career, such as the Robert De Niro, Sr. Prize following solo exhibitions at the Santa Monica Museum Of Art, Corbett vs. Dempsey, Chicago, and Petzel, New York.
