JR (French, b. 1983), a self-proclaimed “photograffeur,” is best known for his large-scale photographic portraits that he pastes on buildings in various different cities. His 2004–2006 project, “Portrait of a Generation,” which involved pasting photographs of disadvantaged youths from the Paris suburbs in the city’s wealthier quarters, received international attention as the illegal act was ultimately endorsed by the authorities. From then on, JR’s work has negotiated the line between illegality and the legal, different authorial voices, and collective memories of people and place. His most recent projects include a ballet commissioned by the New York City Ballet, with music by Woodkid, dances by Lil’ Buck and forty-one dancers from New York City ballet.
