London-based artist Julie Cockburn transforms redundant paintings, photographs and found items, bringing them into a meaningful, and playful, present.
Cockburn was born in 1966 and studied at Central St Martins School of Art and Design and Chelsea School of Art. She has exhibited at The Photographers' Gallery, Arnhem Museum of Modern Art, Walker Art Gallery, ICA, Wellcome Collection, and the Yale Centre for British Art, USA.
Light Composition 4, one of ten portraits of the same woman, is a found photograph overlaid with a bespoke coloured transparent sticker. Cockburn has varied the shape and colour of the stickers in the series as the angle of the shot moves, changing the form of the face underneath.
Cockburn says, ‘It was the differences in the individual shots that I found myself responding to, the slight variation in shape around the nose or eyes… It was as if I was viewing a set of cinematic stills. I imagined watching somebody walking in front of a film screen producing a double distortion; of both the figure in front of the screen and the projected image itself.’
