Keisuke Masuda creates portraits based on real people, either picked from his friends or models from magazines. His portraits are soft in color and often created using watercolor or colored pencils. Resembling a modern-day vanitas, the present work points to other artists who have paved the way in portraiture including Alex Katz and Peter Doig.

Keisuke Masuda (Japanese, b. 1981) works primarily in watercolor and colored pencil to create the brightly colored portraits that characterize his oeuvre. Masuda, born in Tokyo, Japan, is an emerging Asian artist and a recipient of the Tomio Koyama award and First Prize at the Yokohama Art Competition.
