About Kiki Smith

Kiki Smith (American, b. 1954) is an artist living and working in New York City, whose figurative work often explores subjects such as spirituality, gender, race, the human body, and humans’ relationship with nature. She studied at Hartford Art School for eighteen months before moving to New York. Smith is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Skowhegan Medal for Sculpture from the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, the Women in the Arts Award from the Brooklyn Museum (2009), and the U. S. State Department Medal of Arts from Hillary Clinton in 2012. Smith served as the artist-in-residence for the University of North Texas Institute for the Advancement of the arts in the 2013-14 academic year.
