About Leonard Freed

Leonard Freed (American, 1929-2006) was a photojournalist and member of Magnum Photos. He studied at the New School in New York and with Alexey Brodovitch, the Art Director of Harper’s Bazaar. Freed moved to the Netherlands in 1958 to photograph Amsterdam’s Jewish community. During the American Civil Rights Movement, he traveled the United States with Martin Luther King and published “Black in White America" in 1968. He is also known for his images of New York law enforcement, the subject of a book published in 1980. Freed was the recipient of a New York State Grant for the Arts in 1978 and the National Endowment for the Arts in 1980.
