There are no recorded instances of Medusa turning a woman to stone. Her powers were a blessing and a punishment bestowed by The Goddess, giving her the power to paralyze men who would dare to gaze upon her beauty. Snakes are an ancient symbol of women's knowledge. Wings bestow the power of flight to escape, a gift of freedom and bodily autonomy. I see in this myth many references to the religions that came before the patriarchy, in which Medusa would have been worshipped and honored. This work was created specifically for Femaissance: Proserpina.
