About Mary Ellen Mark

Mary Ellen Mark (American, 1940-2015) has garnered international attention for her extensive work and travels focusing on humanist studies. A particularly poignant example of her work comes from years spent in India capturing Indian circuses, brothels in Bombay, and, notably, Mother Teresa. Mark’s depictions of our world’s diverse cultures are landmarks in the field of documentary photography. Her portraits and photo-essays have been featured in a wide range of publications including LIFE, The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair. She received a B.F.A. in Painting and Art History from University of Pennsylvania in 1962 and an M.A. in Photojournalism in 1964 from the same institution. The long list of accolades that Mark has received include multiple Honorary Degrees in Fine Arts and the 2014 Lifetime Achievement in Photography Award from the George Eastman house in Rochester, New York, as well as the Outstanding Contribution Photography Award from the World Photography Organization.
