Shot in 2002 on the Mediterranean coastline of northern Italy, “Bagni Lido Verticale” captures the surface of a rocky divide covered with beach-goers, showing an essential union between the natural environment and the photographer’s human subjects. Massimo Vitali’s work documents expansive landscapes, such as beach scenes, full of figures. His stunningly composed photos cast a critical eye on modern culture, denouncing commodification of leisure activity through sanitized assemblies of anonymous participants.
