Shot in 2002 on the Adriatic coastline of northern Italy, “Papeete Beach Regatta” captures the activities of a densely populated beach with masterful precision, articulating a seamless union between human subject and geographical environment. As seen in this work, Italian photographer Massimo Vitali documents expansive, yet frenzied landscapes that are teeming with people, a visual realization that readily informs the titling of this series, “Landscapes with Figures." His exquisite panoramas are both formally stunning in their use of saturated color and conceptually charged in their engagement with leisure as a commercial phenomenon.
