Shot in 1999 along the Mediterranean coastline of northern Italy, ‘Calambrone’ captures the languid activities of a populated beach with masterful precision, articulating a seamless union between human subject and geographical environment. As seen in this work, Massimo Vitali regularly documents expansive, yet populated, landscapes, a visual realization that readily informs his series, ‘Landscape with Figures.’ His exquisite panoramas are both formally stunning in their use of saturated color and conceptually charged in their engagement with leisure as a commercial phenomenon.

M. Vitali, "Landscape with Figures," Göttingen, 2004.
Massimo Vitali (Italian, b. 1944) is a fine art photographer best known for capturing large scale recreational scenes and beach panoramas. Expertly composed and saturated with color, his documentary efforts explore the commodification and conformism hidden within normalized, leisure settings. His photographs reside within the collections of the Guggenheim, the Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, and the Centre Georges Pompidou, among others, and have been exhibited at galleries worldwide.
