Shot in 1996 along the banks of northern Italy’s Lago di Garda, ‘Garda Look’ captures the languid activities of a populated lakeside with masterful precision, articulating a seamless union between human subject and geographical environment. As seen in this work, Massimo Vitali regularly documents expansive, yet populated, landscapes, a visual realization that readily informs his series, ‘Landscape with Figures.’ His exquisite panoramas are both formally stunning in their use of saturated color and conceptually charged in their engagement with leisure as a commercial phenomenon.

Massimo Vitali (Italian, b. 1944) is a fine art photographer best known for capturing large scale recreational scenes and beach panoramas. Expertly composed and saturated with color, his documentary efforts explore the commodification and conformism hidden within normalized, leisure settings.
