The works of Matthew Chambers (American, b. 1982) are characterized by a sloppy immediacy, which echoes the great enthusiasm he feels for his craft. Though it appears he feels no need to demonstrate a sense of proficiency, his works relish in a mode of deeply technical and calculated abstraction. He works haphazardly, without the aid of sketch or model, the process of his experimentation adding a performative gesture to his works, if not already evident in the complex figurations and tactile folds of his three-dimensional acrylic canvas works. He does not stray from the emotionally confrontational or the improvised, rendering his compositions with the urgency of passionate abandon. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
