About Matthew Pillsbury

Matthew Pillsbury (American, b. 1973) has created several extensive bodies of work including: “Screen Lives,” “Hours,” and “City Stages,” which address different aspects of modern metropolitan life in New York. Inspired by the work of Hiroshi Sugimoto and Abelardo, Pillsbury’s rich black and white photographs document a private domestic landscape that is occupied by the mute presence of screens. The quiet glow of tablets, laptops, televisions, and phones create a psychologically charged image of isolation amongst scenes of crowded museums, parades, cathedrals, and even protests.
