Mickalene Thomas (American, b. 1971) is a Contemporary artist known for her work exploring black urban experience as it pertains to the female gender. Her large-scale works, often embellished with rhinestones, enamel and colorful acrylics, devolve into a series of assertive glances at and away from the figural compositions of her subjects, provide a intercontextuality that references a mix of African patterns and contemporary politics. She received her BFA from Pratt Institute and her MFA from Yale University.
