On December 31, 1957, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Franklin Pope watched Train #42, The Pelican, one of the last steam-powered passenger trains, pass in front of their home moving eastward to Roanoke, Virginia. The next day, January 1, 1958, was the first day diesels took over all passenger runs on line between Bristol and Roanoke, Virginia. This particular image is one in a series of photos that doesn’t feature the couple petting their dog Joe. Shortly after this photograph was taken, the porch was demolished.
