Paul Cowan (American, b. 1985) is a contemporary artist who specializes in painting, sculpture, and installation that revolve around mark making, composition, and authorship. Notably, his “fishing lure” paintings utilize store bought fabrics and the decorative bait used to fly fish and function to depict color relationships between the set materials. Despite the impression of spontaneous or improvised creation, his works are highly considered, as he reinvigorates gesture with urgency and purpose. He received his BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design and his MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
