This legendary photograph of Maggi Hambling and George Melly was shot in The Colony Room Club on 23 February 2006. The two iconic artists had first met at a society party in 1980 and had been close friends until Melly’s death in 2007. Allardyce had met Hambling through Stonewall in the early 1990s, finding her hypnotic gaze and piercing blue eyes fearsome, until realising it was for dramatic affect. Shortly afterwards, Hambling invited Allardyce to her studio. ‘I was spellbound!’ he says. Of Inside The Outsiders, Allardyce says: ‘I knew vaguely of the venue’s history but had never fallen into its decadent foxhole! Maggie and George slipped effortlessly into creased laughter and cackling chatter. G&T’s and the fug of cigarettes did the rest.’
