About Purvis Young

Purvis Young (American, 1943-2010) was a self-taught artist known for his murals, paintings and drawings. His work portrays the experience of African Americans in Miami, depicting both the vibrancy of the city as well as the deterioration of its poverty-stricken neighborhoods. Inspired by the fluid and expressionist style of Baroque, as well as Romantic and Impressionist painters, Young began drawing and painting in earnest when he was incarcerated as a teenager. His work remains within the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
