Description

Fascinated by the complementary relationship of nature and nudity, Ren Hang produces images reminiscent of Guy Bourdin’s highly stylized fashion photographs but with a tactile and dreamlike sensibility. Fighting the governmental forces indirectly, Hang instills activism into his artistic practice, looking beyond the body’s sexualized associations. Hang’s photographs invoke a primordial and harmonious quality, and consider the naked body simply as a visual instrument, concentrating on its formal elements to present nudity as an effortless and purified state, unfettered by any social, historical, or political ties.

About Ren Hang

Ren Hang (Chinese, b. 1987) is a Beijing based photographer and poet whose work is carefully staged although alludes to spontaneity and the snap shot. Ren’s photography portrays the ambiguity of the subject devoid of any sense of self. At times the work is exploitative and highly fetishistic, provoking an immediate emotional response; at other times it is abstract and minimalistic, inviting quiet contemplation. These exploitative and intimate photographs explore the sexuality and fetishism of China's modern contemporary youth subculture.
