About Robert Rauschenberg

Robert Rauschenberg (American, 1925-2008) was a prevalent mid-twentieth century artist whose artistic philosophy consistently challenged the popular Abstract Expressionism movement. Working in all mediums from painting and sculpture to photography, prints, and performance, he is best known for his innovative mixed media series ‘Combines’ (1954-1964) and his ‘Erased de Kooning Drawing’ (1953). Over the years, he often worked collaboratively with other artists, hosted numerous international exhibitions, and won several awards. His work resides in multiple institutions including MoMA, the Tate Gallery, Kunstmuseum Basel, and the Guggenheim.
