Sam Francis (American, 1923-1994) spins French Impressionism, Chinese, and Japanese calligraphic marks, and color field paintings into remarkable studies of light and color. His expansive career incorporates painting, printmaking, and monotypes through his unique monochromatic abstractions. Francis earned his BA and MA from the University of California, Berkeley.
