Born Caledonia Dance Curry, Swoon (American, b. 1977) is a contemporary street and installation artist and activist. Specializing in life-size wheat-paste portraits and cutouts, Swoon’s unique combination of the mystical and the real made her the first woman to gain large-scale recognition within the male-dominated street art scene. Using reclaimed material to produce her work, Swoon is a committed humanitarian and founder of the Heliotrope Foundation, a non-profit committed to community revitalization in Pennsylvania, New Orleans, and Haiti. Her art can be found on numerous buildings throughout New York City as well as within MoMA, Tate Modern, and the São Paulo Museum of Art.
