Long before the term “fake news” appeared in popular culture, Thomas Ruff was interrogating media’s influence on how we perceive the world. His series ‘Zeitungsfotos’ reproduces a number of newspaper photographs without context, immediately making the public images seem more intimate and voyeuristic.

Thomas Ruff (German, b. 1958) is a contemporary photographer, known for his large-scale portraits and provocative nudes. Exploring a breadth of themes and techniques, Ruff focuses on aesthetics and process, forming an oeuvre characterized by conceptualism and subversion. His works have been exhibited internationally and are held within the Art Institute of Chicago, MoMA, the Tate London, among others.
