Tom Sachs (American, b. 1966) is a contemporary artist known for his reconstructions of modern icons using duct tape, foam core, plywood, phone books, and glue guns. Through his work, he counterfeits capitalist cultural icons such as Hello Kitty, Chanel, Hermes, Tiffany’s, and McDonald’s. Sachs refashions objects in a crude, almost masochistic way, as nothing is erased, polished, or sanded, thus revealing the process and construction and insinuating that nothing is ever “finished.” Sachs was educated at Bennington College, the Architectural Association School of Architecture and worked in Frank Gehry’s Los Angeles studio. He currently lives and works in New York.
