Tracey Emin (British, b. 1963) is an English artist and member of the Britarts or YBAs (Young British Artists) who currently lives and works in London. Her humorous yet tragic oeuvre spans the forms of painting, drawing, video, and installation as well as photography, needlework, and sculpture. Engaging a sense of immediacy and sexual provocation within her works, Emin privileges her viewer as both voyeur and confidante as a means to reveal intimate hopes, humiliations, failures, and successes. For this reason, it can be said that the body of her work holds roots in feminist discourse as she contends private matters with inherently political motivations and radical intentions. The artist studied at the Medway College of Design (now the University for the Creative Arts) and Maidstone Art College (now the University for the Creative Arts). Emin was selected to join the Royal Academy of Arts in London as a Royal Academician in 2007 and she represented Britain at the Venice Biennale the same year. In 2011, Emin was appointed Professor of Drawing at the Royal Academy. Emin has lectured at venues such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the Tate Britain, London, and the Royal Academy of Arts, among others, about the relationship between autobiography and artistic creativity.
